The side rod attaches to the steering column lower arm that attaches to the shaft assembly that pivots on your sub frame. The backdrive linkage prevents you from starting a car when the transmission is in gear. This mechanical linkage set-up also engages the reverse backup lights. The only way the steering column locks the transmission and allows the reverse lights to function. It is used for cars with floor shift automatic or column shift automatic.
